Erectile Dysfunction at Different Stages of Life

stages-of-edErectile dysfunction (ED or (male) impotence) is a sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability to develop or maintain an erection of the penis. The term “erectile dysfunction” can mean the inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or the ability to achieve only brief erections. Erectile dysfunction or impotence is a very common sexual problem in men.

Erectile dysfunction is very common problem and it may occur at different ages.

At Teenage and young men:

The Erectile dysfunction at teenage or in younger males occurs due to physiological or emotional causes rather than the physical causes. In younger males, the most frequent cause is anxiety – particularly nervousness about having sex, about causing a pregnancy, or about using a condom. A lot of men in this age group complain that they ‘can’t get on with a condom’ because as soon as they try to put it on, they lose their ‘stiffness’.

The Other reasons are like excessive use of alcohol, chain smoking, and addiction to drugs like cocaine. There are many reasons behind teenage erectile dysfunction and out of these alcohol is very common. Too much alcohol in the body leads to erectile dysfunction since the alcohol results to widened blood vessels. Even if you manage to have an erection, the alcohol would leave the blood vessels to the penis open, draining out the blood and leaving you having a limp penis. Smoking also can have a direct impact on erectile dysfunction. Smoking is also responsible for low sperm counts and loss of libido.

The problem is indeed serious as everywhere one turns one is confronted with the term teenage impotence. With drugs such as Generic Viagra, Kamagra the problem of teenage impotence may be treated, but the immensity of the problem is clearly uppermost on many a teenager’s mind.

At Middle age:

Common causes in this age group are overwork, stress, guilt and bereavement (ED often happens when a widowed man tries to form a new sexual relationship). A few cases are due to diabetes. The over load of work and stress seriously affects your sexual health. Stress and anxiety can make you lose focus on things. It is not uncommon that a man, stressed and worn out from work at the end of the day, usually does not have any drive left for anything else. Stress cuts off your libido, as you are more focused on the stressor instead of anything that is erotically stimulating. Stress also increases your irritability, sapping away your sexual mood instead. The erectile dysfunction at middle age also occurs due to various diseases.

Men with erectile dysfunction should be screened for other risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol high blood pressure and diabetes. There are also new reports suggesting that thyroid too could be a cause of Erectile Dysfunction.

Post-middle age:

But as the time goes on things have to change, everything around you changed like your body parts including the penis. In this group of men, ED gets commoner with increasing age. Nonetheless, 70 per cent of all 70-year-olds are sexually potent. The ageing male experiences a reduction in the activity of the cells of Leydig with an associated drop in testosterone of 0.4–0.8% per year after the age of 50.

It is now clear that in a very high proportion of cases, the problem is due to deterioration in the blood vessels that carry blood into the penis. Research being carried out in 2007 suggests that in addition there may often be deterioration in the arteries of the brain or the heart. Therefore older men with ED should take care to protect themselves against strokes and heart attacks – for example by keeping their blood pressure and cholesterol down.

Impotence can be met successfully with the use of generic drugs which are the replicas of the much expensive prescription drugs. These drugs allow more blood flow to the penis. As more blood flow into it and less flows out, the arteries in the penis enlarge which results in an erection.
